Design Story
As the most significant festival for the Chinese, many brands throughout Asia embrace the new year and corresponding zodiac sign with beautiful custom designs that resonate emotionally with consumers. After years of creating unique limited-edition designs for the holiday, the latest PepsiCo Lunar New Year designs are greatly anticipated. 2021 is the Year of the Ox, an animal which represents the desirable qualities of honesty and hard work. These tailor-made designs each capture a sense of Chinese pride, culture, art and creativity. The Pepsi can features an intricate illustration of a traditional two-performer lion dance, with a bold Pepsi blue background. For the Pepsi Black variant, the can was transformed into a gleaming gold with an iconic representation of the powerful ox, complete with ornamental firecrackers. Other PepsiCo brands also got the Lunar New Year custom design treatment this year. The Mirinda design features the magpie, or !" (the Chinese word ! means joy, happiness) and stylized orange slices. 7UP depicts an elegant red koi fish, a traditional symbol of good fortune, floating in an emerald pond scene complete with peach and apricot blossoms. Amidst the many challenges of the past year, these designs are timelier than ever, expressing good fortune, luck, and peace to all.
