Design Story

Understanding young consumers' pursuit of both quality and creativity, we took the durian as our prototype inspiration and designed a durian-shaped suitcase that is both practical and full of fun. The overall color of the case is golden yellow, and the uneven texture of the surface simulates the characteristics of durian skin, which not only increases the tactile experience of the product, but also attracts consumers' attention through its unique shape. In the face of homogenized large-size and large-capacity boxes on the market, we boldly and innovatively used injection molding or 3D printing technology to accurately shape the PHA plastic into the “thorn” structure of the durian shape, which further enhances the ornamental and interesting nature of the packaging. At the same time, the biodegradability and good physical properties of the PHA material also ensure the practicality and environmental friendliness of the packaging. We hope to break the traditional perception of large packaging at the first glance of the user, while providing him with the corresponding tactile sensation to prove that this is a drink containing durian milk.

Highlights

Appearance: This suitcase is designed to resemble a freshly picked durian, perfectly replicating its unique appearance, with its golden shell glistening in the sunlight. Through the uneven texture, it not only simulates the prickly structure of the durian skin, but also adds a touch of realism and vividness. It breaks the traditional milk packaging routine and redefines the packaging style favored by young people.

Material: We chose biodegradable PHA material, which not only reduces the burden on the environment, but also reflects the sustainable concept of “from nature, to nature”. It not only serves as a delicious storage container for milk, but also provides consumers with easy storage in their daily lives. This innovative choice not only meets consumers' needs for environmentally friendly packaging, but also provides them with a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle choice.

Breaking through the traditional packaging form, the packaging adopts natural bio-based material (PHA), PHA material is completely biodegradable and friendly to the environment. Compared with traditional plastics, PHA has a higher degradation rate and will not accumulate in the natural environment for a long period of time, reducing the problem of plastic pollution.
Design realization:
* Durian shell effect: PHA plastic can be made into a durian-shaped “thorn” structure through injection molding or 3D printing technology.
* Surface treatment: PHA material itself can be dyed, so the visual effect of durian can be enhanced by color matching.

Does the design solve the problems that are common across the product category? If so, please explain.

* Problem: Many traditional packaging materials, especially plastics, can be beautifully shaped, but they pollute the environment and take a long time to degrade, making them difficult to recycle.
* Solution: The use of PHA material itself is a great progress because PHA is a biodegradable plastic. It can be broken down in the natural environment, avoiding the burden of traditional plastics on the environment. PHA material can also be derived from plant-based raw materials (e.g. corn, sugar, etc.), making it more sustainable than petroleum-based plastics. Satisfying us that this Durian Milk is in line with environmentally friendly & sustainable storage/recycling outer box styling.

What functional designs of the work have enhanced the user experience?

1. Innovative reproduction of the durian product real sense of experience
The packaging is designed in the shape of a durian, and the extreme reproduction of the concave and convex texture of the surface of the durian not only attracts consumers' eyes, but also increases the recognition of the product. Through the touch and friction of the consumer's grip, it strengthens the perceptual memory of the consumer's hand and eye experience of the product.
2. Enhance the unboxing experience
The design of the outer box of durian can take into account the convenience of opening the box. Consumers can easily open the package through the handle. It brings a natural feeling of “picking durian” and enhances the consumer's unboxing experience.

1. Environmentally friendly: PHA material is completely biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Compared with traditional plastics, PHA has a higher degradation rate and will not accumulate in the natural environment for a long time, reducing the problem of plastic pollution.
2. Renewability: PHA can be produced from biomass raw materials such as agricultural waste, which helps to realize sustainable development.
3. Safety: PHA is non-toxic to human body, suitable for food packaging, in line with the safety requirements of food contact materials.
4. Good physical properties: PHA has good tensile resistance, impact resistance and thermal stability, suitable for the production of packaging boxes, with sufficient strength to protect the milk products inside the package.
