Design Story

Design Background: At present, the disposable paper cup industry is facing serious homogenization. Traditional paper cups only serve as beverage carriers with a single structure and lack of interactivity, which cannot meet the marketing innovation needs of tea and beverage and fast food brands. Most brand promotional packaging only features simple pattern printing, making it difficult to create a consumer sense of participation and social communication points. Some creative paper cups have high mass production difficulty and high transformation costs due to complex structures, which cannot adapt to brands' large-scale procurement needs. End consumers are also bored with the monotonous paper cup experience and expect packaging designs that combine practicality and fun.
Design Concept: Adhering to the design philosophy of "Taking structural innovation as the core, fun interaction as the wing, practical functions as the foundation, and feasible mass production as the basis", we take the three-layer rotatable structure as the core breakthrough to create two fun interactive gameplay modes, upgrading disposable paper cups from a single carrying container to a brand marketing carrier. Meanwhile, we integrate the practical heat-resistant function, balancing user experience and environmental protection. All designs are based on mature technologies in the packaging industry with only minor equipment modifications, ensuring technical feasibility and cost control. It meets the bulk procurement needs of tea and beverage and fast food brands, realizing the unification of structural innovation, consumer experience and commercial mass production.

Highlights

Highlights: First, the structural innovation of the three-layer rotatable design — the middle layer acts as a buckle to realize the flexible rotation of the outer sticker, breaking the static form of traditional paper cups. Second, two fun interactive gameplay modes (rotating the tearable window to display different patterns and tearing the easy-tear line for blind box gameplay) that can be flexibly switched, satisfying both the sense of exploration and surprise. Third, the "one cup, dual use" heat-resistant design — the remaining double-layer cup can still maintain a good heat-resistant effect after tearing off the outer sticker, with full practicality.
Added Value: Transforming paper cups into a mobile brand marketing carrier, where interaction stimulates social sharing and brings free communication and exposure; the two gameplay modes adapt to diversified scenarios — the window version is suitable for themed promotions, and the blind box version fits new product launches; integrating innovation and practicality to enhance experience without significantly increasing costs; making minor adjustments based on mature technologies to ensure mass production implementation, overcoming the common problem of "emphasizing design over production" in creative paper cups.

The basic manufacturing processes of this work are mature technologies widely used in the packaging industry. The production of conventional double-layer paper cups requires one inner cup machine and one outer sticker machine. Based on the conventional double-layer paper cup production, this work adds an additional outer sticker machine with certain modifications. The technical feasibility has been evaluated, and the transformation cost is manageable.

Does the design solve the problems that are common across the product category? If so, please explain.

This design creates two gameplay modes (rotary window display and tear-off blind box) through the three-layer rotatable structure, turning consumers' passive use into active participation and making the packaging a differentiated marketing carrier. Aiming at the mass production problem, it only requires minor equipment modifications based on mature technologies with controllable costs, adapting to large-scale procurement. In addition, it integrates interaction and practicality — even if the outer sticker marketing layer is torn off, the inner double-layer cup body still has the heat-resistant function, ensuring the basic user experience.

What functional designs of the work have enhanced the user experience?

This design enhances the consumer experience with a variety of functional features centered around three experiential dimensions:
1.Two Gameplay Modes: ① Rotary Interaction: The outer sticker rotates smoothly via the buckle, paired with a window design that gradually reveals different patterns as it spins. It features simple operation and adds a fun interactive touch to consumption scenarios. ② Tear-off Surprise: Pre-set easy-tear lines allow the sticker to be torn open in one step, revealing hidden patterns and creating a blind box-style surprise.
2.Double-layer Heat Resistance: The three-layer structure delivers excellent heat insulation; the inner double layer remains effectively heat-resistant after the outer sticker is removed, ensuring a comfortable grip.
3.Multi-scenario Adaptability: The window version is suitable for daily promotions, gatherings and leisure occasions; the blind box version is ideal for new product launches and social media check-ins.

This work takes into account both environmental and commercial sustainability.
Environmental Aspect: All materials are food-grade coated paper which is recyclable; the structure has no redundant consumables, and the cup remains a practical double-layer cup after the outer sticker is torn off to avoid waste; mature environmentally friendly technologies such as water-based inks are adopted for green production.
Commercial Aspect: Mass production can be achieved with minor modifications based on mature technologies with controllable costs, adapting to large-scale procurement; the two gameplay modes can be flexibly applied to various marketing scenarios and customized by simply changing patterns to boost brand repurchases; the highly interactive design easily triggers social sharing, bringing free communication and long-term value to brands; it accurately focuses on stable markets such as tea and beverage and fast food with broad market demand.
