Design Story
As a unique aquatic plant native to China, the lotus root carries rich cultural symbolism and auspicious meanings in Eastern traditions. Six centuries ago, ancestors ingeniously transformed lotus roots into fine, snow-like powder—a treasured heritage of "Eastern dietary wellness" that endures to this day. It serves not only as a nourishing staple on daily dining tables but also as an elegant gift expressing heartfelt affection among family and friends. However, amid the fast-paced rhythm of modern life, traditional lotus root powder products often appear outdated and lack perceived value, failing to resonate with younger generations’ dual pursuit of quality and aesthetics. As the “leading brand of lotus root foods in China,” HeXian aims to create a more youthful, fashionable, naturally healthy, and premium gift box for lotus root powder. The goal is to enhance both the cultural and commercial value of the product while delivering an elevated consumer experience.
The creative inspiration for this gift box draws from the classical Chinese aesthetic imagery of “the moon reflecting upon a lotus pond.” Using the cyclical interplay of Yin and Yang in Tai Chi as its structural foundation, elements such as lotus roots, leaves, swimming fish, and ripples are artfully combined to symbolize “endless vitality and graceful progression,” composing an aesthetic panorama where “stillness and motion coexist in perpetual harmony.” By applying modern decorative techniques to deconstruct and reconstruct traditional motifs, the design lends natural imagery a contemporary geometric beauty. Combined with the use of partial laser-finish textures, hot stamping, embossing, and other craft techniques, the design vividly transitions from natural association to cultural heritage. At the same time, it conveys a more youthful, fashionable, naturally healthy, and premium quality, shaping a high-end gift box image that blends traditional heritage with a modern sensibility.
Highlights
This work achieves a "modern reinterpretation" of traditional elements, as reflected in the following aspects:
Poetic Narrative:
Inspired by the serene imagery of "the moon over a lotus pond," the design takes the cyclical flow of Tai Chi as its framework. It integrates elements such as lotus roots, leaves, swimming fish, and ripples to construct an aesthetic vision symbolizing "endless vitality." The color palette of lotus pink and fresh leaf green, combined with modern decorative techniques that deconstruct tradition through geometric aesthetics, appeals to younger audiences.
Craftsmanship and Texture:
Laser finishing simulates the shimmering flow of light on water, while embossing creates tactile lotus leaves and fish, extending visual poetry into the realm of touch and enhancing the sense of "ritual gifting."
Structural Ritual:
The outer box adopts a dual-panel design, creating an interactive "panoramic + layered view" experience. The act of opening and closing transitions from "appreciating the scene" to "retrieving the treasure," enhancing both display appeal and purchase motivation.
Ecological Jar Design:
The jar body continues the gift box motif through embossed craftsmanship. Its form draws inspiration from the segmented lotus root, and when arranged, evokes the imagery of "lotus roots resting in clear water, rising steadily section by section." The jar can also be repurposed for storage, extending the product's value beyond its initial use.
