Design Story

The background of each cocktail: ЁRSH Cocktail” (Ruff cocktail) The drink has a rather ambiguous legend of its origin. Such a story simply would not have been possible anywhere except in Russia. The Ruff cocktail owes its birth and name to the merchant class. It happened in the 19th century, when, by the end of the feast, already rather intoxicated merchants poured the remaining alcohol into one large container. The unconventional name of the Ruff cocktail comes from the fact that those who tried this impressive mixture, the hair on their heads stood on end, which resembled the fish of the same name. “Long Otvёrtka” (Screwdriver cocktail) The screwdriver cocktail has an interesting history. The idea to mix juice with vodka first came to the mind of American oil workers who worked in Saudi Arabia in the middle of the 20th century. Since Islam implies leading a sober lifestyle, alcohol consumption was severely punished by local authorities. Resourceful Americans began to dilute alcohol with a large amount of juice, so as not to arouse suspicion among the locals, and stirred the ingredients of the drink with a screwdriver, which was always at hand. “Bloody Mary” This cocktail is perhaps the most popular in the world. This drink, like any legend, has several versions of its origin. History knows one Bloody Mary, who was distinguished by her intolerance towards Protestants and mercilessly burned them at the fires of the Inquisition - Mary Tudor I, the first crowned queen of England, whose day of death was celebrated in the country as a national holiday. After becoming queen, Mary began the revival of destroyed Catholic churches. She was intolerant of Protestants: during her reign, about 300 people were executed. Mary Tudor I went down in history as Mary the Bloody or Bloody Mary.

Highlights

Having learned the history of each name of the cocktails, having perceived it, we decided to depict their names in the design itself in a literal way. The objective was to find new modern images for creating the design for classic and conservative alcoholic beverages. The problem was to stand out among the competitors with their conservative designs of the classic alcohol beverages to draw the attention of the consumers. The solution and approach we have applied is that the creation of a series of designs for classic alcoholic cocktails using interesting graphic elements to make them stand out on the shelf and draw the attention and to show that the classics can also be attractive by means of comical graphic illustrations and literally depicted name in the design.
